Life can sometimes feel like being caught in a tornado of to-do lists, career crises, and family drama. It’s like trying to juggle flaming swords while riding a unicycle blindfolded. And as if that’s not enough, there’s the endless parade of opinions about your choices, your lifestyle, your parenting (if you’re a mom), your career moves, and even how you spend your precious downtime.
It’s utterly exhausting.
But recently, my son dropped a truth bomb that I desperately needed to hear.
A Lesson in Who Cares?
The other day, he was in a small class with two other kids. These two were like peas in a pod, chatting away while my son was in his own world—building Legos and having a full-blown monologue about everything and nothing.
And then, it happened.
One of the kids threw out a dismissive, “Who cares?”
Oof. My heart did a nosedive. My little chatterbox, pouring his heart out, only to be brushed aside like yesterday’s leftovers. My instinct? Oh, you better care, kid! But instead of swooping in like a mama bear, I let it play out.
Michael didn’t even blink. He just replied, “I care.” And continued his Lego masterpiece.
That was enough.
The Power of I Care
As women—especially those of us performing the balancing act of careers, relationships, and personal growth—it’s all too easy to let other people’s opinions run the show. We question if we’re doing it right, if we picked the wrong path, or if we should have delivered that witty comeback differently. We wrestle with guilt. We replay conversations like a broken record. We let others’ approval (or lack thereof) dictate our self-worth.
But Michael, in his simple response, served up a truth worth clinging to:
You care. And that’s enough. 👏
Not everyone has to give your choices a standing ovation for them to be right for you. Your career, your relationships, your values—they matter because you care about them. And at the end of the day, the only opinion that truly matters is God’s.
Release the Weight
So next time you find yourself spiraling over someone’s reaction—whether it’s about how you live your life, how you handle a situation, or just how you exist in this crazy world—pause. Ask yourself, Who really cares?
If the answer is you and God, then that’s plenty!
